The Residential Landlords Association (RLA)
|
|
The Residential Landlords Association
(RLA) is a subscription-based campaigning organisation
providing a range of documents, guides, services and
professional advice to landlords and letting agents
in England and Wales.
In
recent times the RLA has grown in significance and importance.
In addition to providing valuable services to members,
it has a voice at local and national government levels.
The
RLA’s key functions are:
- Campaigning
for fair, reasonable legislation
- Providing
business support
- Helping
landlords and letting agents to be legally compliant
The RLA is well known for its successful local and central
government campaigns. Some current issues include:-
- The
return of LHA (previously ‘Housing Benefit’)
payments direct to landlords
- A
reversal in the legislation requiring planning permission
if there are to be 3 or more unrelated tenants in
a property
- A
fairer system for handling deposit disputes
- Landlord
self regulation through Accreditation Schemes
- The
exemption of accredited landlords from HMO licensing.
- Opposing
any changes to using a Section 21 to gain repossession
of a property
Another of the Residential Landlords Association’s
key functions is providing business support for members
– through a range of products, services and advice.
These include:
|
- The
RLA website - containing more than 30,000
pages of comprehensive and essential information.
- Help
Desk - a team of professional qualified staff
provide free unlimited and impartial advice,
via telephone and email, to help resolve tenancy
problems.
- Landlord
documentation – an award-winning Plain
English tenancy agreement, possession notices,
good letting tips, and more, are all available
in the members’ area of the RLA website.
|
|
|
- Credit
Checks - checking potential tenants’ financial
worthiness, CCJ’s, credit history, electoral
role and credit risk.
- News
- regular magazines and e-mail newsletters contain
all the latest industry news.
- Training
– there are classroom and on-line training courses
on a wide range of business, health and safety subjects.
All
the support that RLA members need to operate a successful,
compliant business – for just £75 per year.
The
private rented sector is one of the most highly-regulated
commercial business areas and the RLA effectively focuses
on providing its members with up to date information
to ensure they are legally compliant.
The
Government legislates - the RLA works with Councils
to provide the education and support services that are
essential for landlords to protect and develop their
interests whilst providing safe, decent, affordable
homes for a wide cross section of tenants.
